“Indiana Plein Air Painters Association to Launch Painting Indiana III Project”
Hoosier artists once again have the opportunity to be a part of history-in-the-making as the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association (IPAPA), in partnership with Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, launches its third Painting Indiana project.  History, art and architecture have always been important to the people of Indiana and it will make an interesting subject matter for this latest collaboration.  The end result will be the publication by Indiana University Press of a book featuring 20 historic landscape paintings by early Hoosier artists, and images of 80 to 100 paintings of similar scenes to be produced by some of IPAPA’s 200 member artists.

The new Painting Indiana III book will showcase never-before-published reproductions of paintings of Brown County hills, the valleys of Brookville and Metamora, cityscapes in Corydon and the Dunes on Lake Michigan by such revered Hoosier artists as T.C. Steele, William Forsyth, J. Ottis Adams, John Bundy and Frank Dudley.  Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana will help to identify potential sites of inspiration for current artwork by today’s artists, who continue the tradition of capturing en Plein air (on location) the natural and scenic beauty found throughout the state. .  The book’s text will be written by art author Rachel Berenson Perry.  In addition to articles in American Art Review and Traces of Midwest and Indiana History, Perry is the author of T.C. Steele and the Society of Western Artists: 1896-1914 (I.U. Press, 2009).

“This is the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking Painting Indiana project,” IPAPA President Shaun Dingwerth explained. “The project has brought awareness to the plein air movement and has continued the rich tradition of painting in Indiana.  It also offers our state’s artists the opportunity to have their works exposed to the public.”

A call for artists to participate in a juried competition of works is currently underway. Specific parameters for paintings and information about the logistics and deadlines may be obtained from the project’s website www.inpainters.org and through the IPAPA newsletter.  Artists will have 18 months to create their submissions with judging set for the fall/winter of 2011.  The annual meeting of IPAPA will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis.  Artists interested in participating in the project are encouraged to attend.
